Top 10 Tips to Become a Safe Driver

1. Wear Seat Belt

Seat belt prevents you from being thrown through the windshield or hitting the dashboard or side window when your car crashes. The NHTSA statistics reveal that more than 50 percent car crash fatalities included people who were not using seat belts.

2. Keep a Safe Distance from the Car Ahead

Do not follow other cars too closely. You need enough time to react if the car ahead makes a sudden turn or stop. Follow the “three-second rule” to keep a safe distance with the car ahead. When the car passes a stationary object on the side of the road, starts counting seconds. Your car should pass the same object after at least three seconds. At night or in bad weather the recommended time is six-second.

3. Avoid Distraction When You are Driving

Do not respond to a text when you are driving. You can download and activate AT&T’s DriveMode app in your cell phone which bounce back all incoming texts with customized message to let your friends know you are driving. Talking and texting while driving can delay reaction times by up to 20 percent. That’s why many states in the U.S. ban the use of cell phones while driving. Cell phones are not the only culprit causing distraction. Eating, fiddling with electronic devices, interacting with talkative passengers can also divert a driver’s attention.

4. Maintain Moderate Speed

Most of us have a tendency to reach our destinations sooner. For a mere 16.1 kph increase in speed increases your car crash risk by 50 percent. Maintain a moderate speed and obey the speed limits. The speed limit signs and signals are set for your safety. If you want to reach your destination as fast as possible, leave as early as possible.

5. Keep Your Hands on the Steering Wheel Properly

Keep your hands on the steering wheel at either 9 and 3 or 8 and 4 positions on the clock. Keeping your hands in lower positions give you more control and stability while driving. It is also considered as the most ergonomic position to hold your hands for longer periods of time.

6. Never Ever Drive Drink

The NHTSA data shows nearly 40 percent car accidents in the United States involve alcohol consumption which led to 33,561 deaths in 2012 alone. Most of those deaths could have been avoided if the drivers refrained themselves from drinking or refused to drive as they were drunk. Alcohol causes blurred or double vision and loss of consciousness at higher level. In the United States if you are caught driving with a blood-alcohol content of 0.08 or higher you would probably end your trip to jail. Even a low or moderate alcohol consumption reduces reaction time and coordination. Avoid driving drunk at any cost. Instead ask your friend or call a cab to go back to your home.

7. Do Not Drive When You are Sleepy

According to a study in 2010, one in every six fatal car crashes involved a drowsy driver. If you are tired enough to fall asleep while driving, you know the results. Make sure you get a better night’s sleep before a long drive. Even on a short trip if you are driving and feel sleepy do not hesitate to ask your friend take over the driver’s seat.

8. Be Extra Cautious in Bad Weather

Be extra careful if you are driving through heavy rain, fog, snow storm or on icy roads. Drive below the speed limit and maintain extra space with the car ahead. Be extra cautious around curves in bad weather.

9. Do Proper Maintenance of Your Car

Car maintenance not only extends your car’s life it also keeps you safe on the road. One of the most common maintenance issues that can lead to a car crash is uneven tire pressure. Improper tire pressure or too high or low pressure can impact your car’s performance. Buy a pressure gauge from any auto parts store and check the pressure frequently as per the recommendation in your owner’s manual. Another major maintenance issue is your car’s brakes. If you feel some softness in the brake pedal or notice a vibration when applying the brakes, it’s time to check your car by a mechanic. The brakes could be wearing out or there is an issue in the car’s hydraulic system.

10. Take an Online Defensive Driving Course

Learn useful tips on driving by taking an online defensive driving course. It not only makes you a safe driver it can save your money too. Several insurance companies offer discounts to drivers who have finished defensive driving courses.

Natural Ways to Lower Your High Blood Pressure

Although medicines play an important role in lowering high blood pressure quickly, it has several side effects, especially for those who have been taking drugs for a long period. Follow the simple tips given below to keep your blood pressure at normal level.

Exercise Regularly

Regular exercise – at least 30 minutes for six days a week can effectively lower your blood pressure. And if you are an obese person, you should lose the extra pounds as BP often increases as you gain weight. Even a simple fitness walk at a brisk pace can lower pressure by almost 8 mm Hg over 6 mm Hg. You may opt for breathing exercise, tai chi or yoga for more benefits. You should practice these methods under the supervision of an expert.

Adopt a Healthy Diet

Include whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products in your daily diet as these are well known types of foods that lower blood pressure. Say no to saturated fat and cholesterol. By adopting a healthy diet you can lower your blood pressure by up to 14 mm Hg. This type of diet is known as DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension). Here are some tips to help you getting a healthy diet comfortably.

  • Add Potassium into Your Diet

Potassium is a well known source which can reduce the bad effects of sodium on blood pressure. Take fruits and vegetables to include potassium into your system rather than supplements to lower blood pressure. Add potassium-rich foods like potatoes, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, oranges, bananas, kidney beans, peas, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, and dried fruits such as prunes and raisins in your daily diet to reach the recommend potassium levels of 2,000 to 4,000 mg a day.

  • Reduce Sodium Intake

Limit sodium intake to maximum 2,300 mg a day. If you are of 50+ age or have high blood pressure or you are a diabetic or have chronic kidney disease, take 1,500 mg a day or less. Keep yourself away from processed foods. Replace salt with herbs or spices in your food as 1 teaspoon of salt contains 2,300 mg of sodium. A small reduction of sodium in your daily diet can lower your BP by 2 to 8 mm Hg.

  • Drink Alcohol in Moderate

Moderate drinking has several benefits including lowering blood pressure by 2 to 4 mm Hg. But as it is too much addictive and is potentially harm due to its several direct and side effects I can’t recommend it to a non-drinker to drink alcohol for lowering blood pressure. But if you are already a drinker, I would recommend for people below 65 years maximum two drinks per day and one drink for people above 65 years. You should remember, One drink equals to 12 ounces or 355 ml of beer, 5 ounces or 148 ml of wine or 1.5 ounces or 45 ml of 80-proof liquor. Say no to binge drinking as having four or more drinks in a row can suddenly increase your blood pressure in addition to other health hazards.

  • Say No to Smoking

Smoking a single cigarette can raise your blood pressure by 10 mm Hg or more for up to an hour after you smoke. People who smoke several cigarettes a day tend to have high blood pressure. A second hand smoke increases other health problems including high blood pressure and heart disease.

  • Check Caffeine Impact on Your Body

Caffeine acts differently on person to person. Check your BP within 30 minutes of drinking coffee or any other caffeinated beverage. If your BP level increases by 5 to 10 points, your body is sensitive to caffeine’s effect of blood pressure. You need to cut down your daily caffeine intake.

  • Drink Herbal Tea Containing Hibiscus

According to a study conducted by the researchers from Tufts University, people who drink at least 3 cups of hibiscus tea regularly, have lowered systolic blood pressure by 7 points in 6 weeks on average. The phytochemicals present in hibiscus may be responsible in lowering blood pressure. Instead of buying a regular tea pack look for herbal tea containing hibiscus as one of the top ingredients.

  • Treat Yourself Once A Week

Forget DASH diet and eat & drink what you like, but in moderate once a week. After following a healthy diet and workout for six days a week, you deserve an unhealthy break.

Eliminate Your Stress

Stress is one of the factors responsible for increasing your blood pressure temporarily. Eliminate or reduce your stress by taking up deep-breathing exercise, massage, yoga or meditation under an expert’s supervision. Or you can simply listen to music to get relaxed.

If you have loud snoring habit or you have symptoms like daytime tiredness and early morning headaches, then you already have high blood pressure or you are prone to high BP. I would recommend you to consult to your doctor and follow the guidelines mentioned above to get rid of this problem.

Best Ways To Improve iPhone’s Battery Life

Your iPhone genuinely has several outstanding features except a major drawback which is its battery life. You have to recharge your iPhone every couple of days to get going. There are several ways you can use to improve iPhone’s battery life. Follow the tips given below to extend Apple iPhone’s battery life.

How to Improve iPhone’s Battery Life

Turn Off Wi-Fi

Turn off wi-fi when you do not need it or you are at a place where wi-fi is not available. iPhone will waste battery life when it searches for wi-fi signal for a long time. Do not be tempted in turning on wi-fi to search for a hotspot each time you go outdoor.

Turn Off Bluetooth

Turn off Bluetooth when you are not transmitting data wirelessly. Wireless data transfer or simply enabling Bluetooth consumes more battery life compared to your iPhone with Bluetooth off. To turn off Bluetooth, go to Settings > Bluetooth and move slider to off.

Turn Off Frequent Locations

The default settings allow iPhone to learn the places you visit most so that the apps can hit you with targeted ads. I think you probably do not need those ads. You can easily turn this option off by going through Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services, and scroll down to the end to turn off Frequent Locations. Turning off this feature will surely act as iPhone battery extender.

Turn On Airplane Mode in No Connectivity

Whenever you are in a place like on a planr or on the subway with no connectivity, turn on the Airplane Mode. It will extend your iPhone’s battery life.

Turn On Auto Brightness

Your iPhone uses an ambient light sensor which adjusts the screen brightness based on the light available around it. By turning Auto Brightness on you can save battery life as your screen will consume less power in dark places. Go to your Settings app > Brightness & Wallpaper > Auto Brightness On.

Reduce Screen Brightness

You can adjust your iPhone’s brightness throughout the day with iOS 7. The default screen brightness is much higher which requires more battery. Bring your screen brightness down as far as possible to increase the battery life. You can adjust it in Settings > Brightness & Wallpaper.

Turn Off Apps Auto Updates

The iOS 7 allows you to forget updating your iPhone apps. Its new feature automatically updates your apps when new versions are released. It is no doubt a convenient way in getting updated with all apps. But it surely drains out your battery life faster. If you do not mind manually updating your iPhone apps, you can turn off apps auto updates by going through Settings > iTunes & App Store > Updates and move the slider to off.

Stop Background Motion

Background motion is one of the coolest features in iOS 7. When you move your iPhone you can notice the app icon and background image will move slightly independently as they are on different planes. This is due to the parallax effect of background motion which looks cool but drains your iPhone battery faster. You can turn it off by going through Settings > General > Accessibility > Reduce Motion and move the slider.

Disable Dynamic Backgrounds

Another cool feature in iOS 7 is Dynamic Backgrounds – the stunning animated wallpapers which move underneath your iPhone’s app icons. It undoubtedly consumes more battery than a static background image. You do not need to turn off the feature, just prevent yourself from selecting Dynamic Backgrounds in the Wallpapers & Backgrounds.

Turn Off Background App Refresh

Another new feature in iOS 7 is Background App Refresh which automatically refreshes apps you use most often. This important feature drains more battery. To turn off Background App Refresh, go to your Settings > General > Background App Refresh and disable full features or specific apps.

Turn Off AirDrop

You can easily share files and photos with your friends in iOS 7 through AirDrop app. The app drains out your battery faster particularly when it is in “discoverable” mode. You should turn off AirDrop when not using it. Simply swipe up from your home screen to access the Control Center. Now tap AirDrop and select Off.

Set Auto-Lock to ASAP

Set Auto-Lock to as soon as possible in your iPhone to automatically go to sleep after a scheduled time. The sooner your iPhone sleeps it consumes less battery power. Customize this option by going through Settings > General > Auto-Lock > Tap your Preference.

Turn Off Equalizer

iPhone’s iPod app has a feature called Equalizer which is used to adjust bass, treble etc to improve your music experience. If you are comfortable compromising your listening environment, you can turn the Equalizer off by going through Settings > Music > EQ > Tap Off.

Turn Off Siri’s ‘Raise to Speak’ Feature

Siri can be activated automatically if you hold your iPhone close to your face. The proximity sensor in Siri always checks if are nearby which may impact the battery life. To disable this feature, go to your Settings > General > Siri and turn off the ‘Raise to Speak’ button.

Prevent Spotlight Search from Indexing All Files
